I am currently a college student looking to start a tutoring business for math and physics geared towards high school students. I plan to launching a summer program for different subjects in math/physics. However, I am having trouble finding students. Recently, I went on Facebook and Nextdoor groups to advertise my services but there was no one who called me back. I've even tried going door to door and no one took my flyer. I wanted to hang up flyers in high schools as well but those get taken down fast.

Should I continue doing what I'm currently doing or should I try something else?
I was thinking about building a website but I'm not sure if that will help.

Let me know what you guys think!
Any help would be appreciated!

Run a Facebook LeadGen Ad for £5/day for 4 days and see if you get any results.

Post your flyer so we can give some feedback about it

Your flyer sucks.

Your flyer needs to:
1. Address the person you want to talk to. If you want to tutor high school kids, then you want to address parents. "Do you have a child at high school whom you want to ensure that your child excels in maths and physics?" (find a better way to word this, but it should be to this effect)
2. Link features to benefits "With regular private tutoring we can help your child get better grades and excel in their maths and physics subjects"
3. Have a CTA. "Call Fred on 11111111 to book a free introductory lesson for your child"

Read a book like Ca$hvertising before you do any more promotion, nothing you do at the moment will work

Add some credibility

If you have a 1500 SAT or maybe excel at certain AP exams, or have students that have went to great colleges, show it as clear as possible.

It speaks VERY well to the parents and students cause its exactly what they want.

What I've seen work (as a parent of 2 who hired tutors for various subjects when they hit their final years of high school), & in order to build up cred (which is key), consider joining a reputable tutoring agency temporarily to begin with.

From there offer great, reliable service and once you have enough parents and a network of recommendations, then you can easily ditch the agency and go solo. One of our tutors did exactly that, and because we had already built up a level of trust with her, I was happy to pay her directly. This then cost me less and she could earn more (as there was no 3rd party involved to bump up the price).

Reason I liked going through an agency is that they usually show a profile on each tutor with their Yr 12 Uni entry results and what their specialised subjects were along with reviews. But this wasn't the key reason I remained with those tutors. Super important is that I wanted someone that my kids could feel comfortable with and would come to my house so I wasn't taking a time hit driving them around and I could get on with other things I needed to get done and work etc.

Another way I sourced tutors was through my local parenting communities (both in person and via FB).

Parents will take the recommendations of others very highly. So I feel 'cold canvassing' on this one could be a harder road. Consider covering multiple options while starting out - via an online tutoring agency, FB community groups, posters etc while you build up credibility and a word of mouth network. Then you could migrate to building your empire :)

Be specific

I'm a (exam name) (subject) tutor for (grade you teach)

I have been tutoring for (teaching years) years+ for students from (some school around your neighborhood)

Value preposition:
- flexible reschedule
- study then pay first
- etc

Call/chat me on (7282828) - your name

I post it around my fb community. The problem with mine is to find a good replacement tutor & share the info to my community because it's hard to find a fb group that not saturated by spam ads

Make. Better flyer. Contact high-schools directly...there's like, what, 50 high-schools?

Drive by...leave a package for the math teachers...let them sell it for you.

Recruit a kid from each school. Pay them $5 per registration.

Do things that don't scale

If you have no students, you need to grow by undercutting the industry average price.

Start with 30 percent less what your credentials deserve.

Tuition is a market with very standard price. Your credential, and the level of the student determine the price.

In my country Singapore the market is so large that we have tutors agency. They will find students for you and your first two sessions’s money go to them.

The monthly expenditure per household on tuition for kids is $1k per month here.
