Just wondering, should we all be getting a patent as soon as we start working on our idea or does it have to be more "official?"

Welcome to the club :)
For all future ventures, assume that this will happen within 1 week of going live. Ask me how I know...

EDIT: The good news is, they probably don't believe in the idea enough to go all in. The real question now is: do you?

development of what tho? you have to have something to patent.... you cant really patent/protect an idea you have to be able to describe it in enough detail that someone in the industry could make/reproduce it by what you have described.

if you don't have a product or service or completed something or at least a fully thought out plan/idea that you can put to paper there is nothing to protect...

Most business's/ideas can be replicated and made better and more efficient somehow.
Your idea might have been stolen but that website looks like its been stuck together in less than a day.
So are you going to just close the book on this idea or is this going to put some FIRE in your belly and do it your way and BETTER?

This guy is doing you a favor. If his site succeeds, you got the actual domain. You can piggy back off of his type in traffic. If this guy was smart he'd come after you for the domain name afterwards claiming he used that word first.

Just by the typing font, this guy uses in his website, you can tell he is no professional, so there's still plenty of time to do a better job than him.
