I grew up on a farm in Guyana, South America. Went to university there and studied for a double major B.A. degree in Spanish and French language and literature, graduating with a Distinction. It was a lot of fun and I got to visit Martinique out of it, which ordinarily is not a place I would have gone on my own. I left Guyana in my early twenties (my family is still there) to live in Venezuela, then Canada, then the US and now the UK. Just recently lost my job in December 2012 due to being laid off and am sick of the whole job thing as I have only ever held jobs.
Basically I am now living off of my partner (I owe him one) while I think about what to do but I don't want to waste a lot of time depending on someone else. At the same time, I am writing my dissertation for an Msc in Environmental Management (Countryside Management and Protected Areas) and overextending myself with studying a couple of other things at the same time.
I came across MJ's book and read it over the last weekend, barely sleeping. I marked up paragraphs but will to go over it again now to pull out some key points. Thanks MJ by the way. I can't express my appreciation enough because I am an avid book reader in general and there is so much entrepreneurial knowledge in that book for someone like me, it has given impetus to my thoughts of running my own business. I never thought of myself as being capable of running my own business before. I have read other "guru" books e.g. Two dads but never got anywhere with them.
At any event, I am on this forum because I read the book and I want to start my own business. I have been a qualified translator in the past and just finished working for a translation agency as Marketing Manager so I was thinking of opening my own translation agency. However, I would be the key translator unless I contract out work to other translators etc. as agencies do. Otherwise it's more a "job" than a business except that I am working for myself. Also it's a cut throat world with oodles of competition. I'm not sure that's where I want to be but it's a thought.
I have also thought about writing a book but I'm no J.K Rowling and I don't quite see how I could make a living from that except as supplementary income.
Another idea I had was of packaging up my translation knowledge and selling that as forms or checklists but much of it is available free on the internet anyway so why would someone want to pay for it.
Anyway, that is me. Sorry if this is quite lengthy but it's a bit of a "blurt". I am hoping to mainly get business knowledge out of this forum by reading other people's stories ‘cause I am starting from scratch and, yes, much later in life than most.
Oh. One more thing: I don't want a Lamborghini... I want a Bentley Mulsanne...eventually.
