Under recommendation from this forum I’ve recently read (and enjoyed) Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell.
In the book he introduced the “10,000 hour rule”; that it takes roughly 10,000 hours of an activity (music, sport, computer programming etc) to become a world class expert in that field. He proposes that a fundamental part of Bill Gates success is that, due to his fortunate school/local university, he was one of a few people (let alone 13yos) in the world to have unlimited access to the world’s most modern computers for his most of his teenage years.
This rule has stayed with me since reading the book, however after watching the Tim Ferriss and Kevin Rose podcast posted a few days ago I can’t help but feel this is in direct contradiction to Tim Ferriss’ “life hacker” approach to languages, skills and business.
There are certain skills (such as concert pianist) where I believe the 10,000 hours is critical to world class success however I am curious of your opinions...
Are there any areas in the fastlane where 10,000 hours is necessary – you just can’t succeed without a significant level of experience (venture capitalist comes to mind) – or is there always a “smarter”, faster way to achieve comparable results?
