Hey Fastlane Forum,
On some level I've always wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I never knew how to turn it into an actual life path. I had a business selling t-shirts in high school/college, alongside a small web design business.
They made me a little money at the time, but eventually those businesses failed due to mismanagement and lack of knowledge on my part. I then reluctantly focused on school and ended up working at a bank for a year then going to law school. After graduation, I realized if there was any time to make a leap, it was then while I still had no expenses and before I got lulled into the comfort zone of having a steady paycheck.
I spent the next half a year trying a bunch of random things online - even went back to the ol' ebay business, but the environment had changed too much. I realized I had to learn how to build a business outside of the eBay ecosystem. Eventually during my process of self-education, I stumbled onto affiliate marketing and SEO and over the past few years I've managed to do ok for myself. It happened really quickly...one moment I had a bunch of debt and was working 80 hour weeks, sometimes earning negative money, a few months later I had financial freedom for the foreseeable future. Its amazing what happens when you have scale and time working for you.
I have freedom these days and its amazing. I work hard, but only because I truly enjoy it. I remember the year when I had a "real" job and every weekday was about counting down the minutes until I could go home and sleep. Now, every morning I look forward to that first cup of coffee so I can get to work.
I actually found TMF book a few years ago while I was still struggling to make a full-time living without a job, and it really crystallized everything for me. I was on the right track, and everything was just part of the process. Like MJ I studied other self-made entrepreneurs, and there were common threads in their stories I kept seeing over and over again.
Right now I'm working on a SaSS product that meets a need in my industry. My goal for the next year is to build a sustainable, value-creating business. You can make a good living w/ SEO and affiliate marketing, but it violates quite a few fastlane commandments - especially the commandment of control. I look forward to sharing that story w/ the Fastlane community.
