We've all heard it - "Money is the root of all evil". And who chants these words the most? Sidewalkers.
And I'm here to say: POVERTY is the root of most evil. NOT money.
Recently, I've seen more and more cutesy phrases splashed over social media. Things like "most men are so poor, they only have money".
Although the underlying lesson is valuable-- most people use these phrases simply as a way of coping.
"I cherish my family relationships, I don't need money". Yeah. I agree. These things are far more important than money. And guess what? Money = more of the things you actually cherish.
So, instead of slogging away 8 hours a day in a cubicle, you can watch your children bloom in the comfort of your home. You can F*ck off to a fancy restaurant with your spouse at 12 noon, grow your relationship and cherish every second.
So what is my point? These cutesy phrases are a coping mechanism-- and people that spread them know it. They're designed to shield ourselves from future endeavours that may contain risk.
And guess what? Despite what anybody thinks-- most people's decisions revolve solely around money. Let's be real- 99% of people attend college solely to make more money. When it doesn't happen and they're prostituting their time, they resort to swallowing these bullshit quotes to find comfort, not gratitude.
What is really evil in today's society?
• Sacrificing eight hours per day to work and missing opportunities to grow alongside your loved ones
• Absorbing ill-meaning quotes to justify your position
• Actually coming to believe that freetime, enabled by money, is evil because your Instagram page told you so.
• Believing that capitalism is inherently evil, despite the fact it advocates perpetual innovation.
In summary, yes there's more important things than money. But don't act like money isn't the gatekeeper to experiencing more of these things. Moreover, most of the cutesy quotes are written by those who simply quit their pursuit of freedom. They're complacent and justifying it through other means. In reality, whatever perception of riches they possess, can be heightened through the accumulation of money.
