So, this guy I met awhile back when I was still at my old job posted this on Facebook this morning. I'm pretty sure we all know what everyone's reaction will be, but I just wanted to provide this case study of the "victim" mindset.
Paul Stanley (Kiss) posted a link to this story of a 92-year-old who became the oldest person to complete a marathon (amazing indeed) and asked "What's holding you back if she can do this?!" I almost answered "...my Parkinson's" even though I don't yet have Parkinson's. I really hate his uplifting live-to-win shit. Some people are meant to reach for and grab the ring (and are lucky they were in the right place at the right time) and then there is everyone else. Don't make me feel worse for not being you by dangling your success in front of my face and ask "Why not you too?" like it's going to happen for us all if we all just work hard enough.
No...it won't. Goals are great, but that can be a demoralizing message in its own right if you don't also acknowledge the intangibles (like luck, timing, a good support group, and a million other things that accompany "hard work.")
At age 46 (nearly) the only thing stopping me from being the next LeBron James is not just my work ethic on the court. That can never happen. Not every dream is achievable, so stop pretending that YOU are your only colonic blockage. Just say "Thank you!!" and eat your fancy dinner wherever you flew first class to eat that night and leave everyone else alone already. I'm not being bitter here, just in touch with something below the top percentile; you know, that underachieving village where the world actually lives.
