I want to start with a thank you - To all of you here, all the stories regardless of whether they're successful or stepping stones. I was lurking here for a while, reading, learning, finding that I'm not alone in having been so hard on myself. I used to wonder if it were something wrong with me, why I couldn't just be content with what I have..
A little about me - I'm an effects artist for feature film, my background is pretty technical but not so much programming as it is problem solving. I would consider myself fairly successful in what I do professionally. I graduated with a bachelors in fine art, walked accross the stage on a Friday to grab my diploma and was on a plane the next afternoon to start work Monday for one of the largest effects studios in the world. But it wasn't enough.. I just see this inevitible glass ceiling, the increase in pay only adds water to the tank and the closer I get the ceiling the more I feel as though I would drown.
My coworkers for the most part are slowlane, perfectly happy to be there and look to me as some kind of ungreateful jerk for wanting more. Their negativity is poisonous and I knew that but its so hard to get away from and this forum, all of you are just a window for fresh air. So again thank you.
A few days ago I kind of snapped, ordered Mj's book and got to work. I havent really gotten much sleep over the last two days. I'm not a programmer, my biggest hurdle was finding people. Anyway, my point being, in 48 hours I went from passivly skeptical to aggressively not afraid of failure and ya know what.. The app I wanted, the one I can't program, is on my phone and it works. I've got programmers for Android, IOS, and will get this done. Its clunky, it needs a LOT of work, but it functions and I'm not crazy.
MJ, I'll be honest I havent yet read your book but I can't wait to get it. I didn't expect to get to a point where I'd want to share before the book arrived. I'll be here to keep track of progress and of course be posting that in the appropriate subforum. I felt like this was more of an intro than app related so I hope it doesnt get deleted.
Side note - The two quotes, silly and probably very old, but regardless -
"When you want to be successful as bad as you want to breath, then you'll be successful"
"Do what others won't early so you can do what they can't later"
^- This one in particular really stuck because its something people made fun of me for in college.
