i think i posted a similar thread a little ways back. i was curious how sites like myspace, friendster, rentacoder, elance etc. evolve. i don't recall ever knowing about these sites until one day they were just big. i tried to investigate some previous archives of these (and similar) sites to get an idea of the path taken which lead them to successful web sites. not too much info could be found.
i'm curious as to what other members would do if they had a challenge to create a website like that of those listed above.
how would you structure your prelaunch?
how would you market?
how would you obtain users? (you don't just get a few thousand users the first day)
how would you tackle the challenge of having an active community from the beginning. (imagine if myspace had 20 users when you signed up. how quickly would you cancel your account?

so on that note, how would you internet entrepreneurs tackle these as well as other challenges to ensure a successful web site?
