Some time last summer, I looked at post count, and speed and likes, and was just thinking how did this work?
and I determined I wanted to provide more value than I took, so I made a personal goal to at least to try to get to a 1-1 post/like ratio.
no real reason other than, if I could post something and someone got something out of it. Great, but it kept me from posting random crap.
it was a personal Spam filter
the reason? the older I get, the more value I want to create in the world, and the less random acts of thoughtless, undirected action I want to experience.
no other reason than that.
the forum provides a nice little tool, allowing me to actually measure my interactions in a specific context.
and while speed was a cool measurement, I was more looking to achieve parity with my post/like ratio. Why?
simply signal to noise ratio.
when I was in my 20's the more noise I made in the world, the more valuable i must be. people listened to me just because I could make more noise.
in my 30's i realized the better signal gets you much higer quality intreactions with people, and hence better money, deals, oppertunities, and simply a better quality of life.
in my 40's I have come to realize that in order for me to achieve what I want in the world, I must carve away the most noise possible, and have as clean and clear a signal as I can get.
Kinda hard for a noise maker like I was
and so I set a very minor goal for myself. more signal less noise, and my meter would be likes to posts ratio of 1-1
In the busy days, I failed to noitice I had recenlty surpased that ratio. a very pleasant surprise I must say.
as a question, What do you do?
to measure your improvements? in communication? in Life? in your business interactions?
what are some of your personal metrics you seek to improve?
Alot of people on the forum use money as a end all be all measurement, simply because they dont have it. and while its A measurement for sure, its a limited one when it comes to measuring who you are in the world.
Just to let you know, I have several new ones in my life. and Some I am seeking find the metrics for.
most are simple things like
How many times my daughter and I can have a totally focused micro cosmos experience, where the rest of the world fades but what we do.
How many times I can totally focus on one of those "long coffee conversations" with my wife
How often do I get to have a zen moment of simply "Being"
all these measurements are simply for 1 thing. becoming aware of gentle slow, improvement in the right directions. they are markers for me to let me know the current is flowing in the right direction, rather than randomized careless squandering of life.
I spoke with a gentleman this week, who was in his 50's and realized he had reached a similar point in his past. where achieving HUGE goals shifted to simple, small, consistent improvements over time.
he was a pretty cool guy. more money than he could spend, a good well rounded life, and just overall, just a good guy.
I'm still working on my cool guy badge. but at this point, its just something that will happen, one like at a time
