I'm writing this for no other reason than to see if anyone can relate, not to bitch or complain. I am on my way to the Fast Lane and I am fully aware that I can quit this job and find another at any time. Regardless, here I go
I work at a car wash/car detailer. I have worked there for 1 year and I never really noticed what was going on until now.
One Mexican guy quit who spoke English, and needless to say the boss was not happy. I was told that they need people who speak English to communicate with people in the back of the building where the cars pull up to select what wash they want. Now, the guys who are back there get to stay in the shade all day, they vacuum a car, pull it around on the tracks, press a few buttons on a keypad and send the car through.
The guys up in the front are outside for 9 hours a day in 90 degree weather. There is never a white person working in the shade, always in the front. I went to take my lunch break which was normally 20 minutes, that is the only break I get. He comes in yelling at me "COME ON IT'S BUSY! 10 MINUTES! MAKE IT FAST!". 10 minute break for 9 hours of works, and the best part. The guy telling me to hurry up is the dude who is under the canopy all day just vacuuming cars not doing shit.
Now, if I just joined 1 week ago, I would not be complaining. There is no sense of entitlement that I have. But I figured that if I worked there for a year and a half I should at least have a shot at working in the back. ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I SPEAK ENGLISH. Now, the difference between equal opportunity and equal outcome is
Equal Opportunity - Show us you can stick it out in the front, get rewarded with working in the back
Equal Outcome - I WORKED HERE FOR A WEEK! THEY ARE IN THE BACK! WHY CAN'T I BE!?
I am a bit confused as to why all the Mexicans guys just laugh at me when I ask when I could work in the back like everyone else has since I've been there a year.
I get paid 6.50 an hour plus the tips. I'm told the tips aren't taxed, but 6.50 is under minimum wage.....and I get taxed for that, but wait- if it showed up as 6.50 - That's illegal. Which means they do add my tips to my pay check and they do tax them. Also, the whole "Tips" thing is a false incentive. Funny how we all split the tips equally, so the Mexican guy walking around on his phone vs the white dude getting yelled by at him gets the same amount of money as me.
To finish it off, we have these things called "Express Details". A car may get washed, but it will have a card in it that requires someone to go to the back of the building, use the machines to detail the car.
Now.... I noticed that it is ALWAYS the foreigners doing it. Funny, never a white guy. Oh wait! Maybe because they get tipped extra and they don't need to split it with everyone else. So while everyone else is pulling the weight, they get to sit in the back, F*ck around on their phone, and still get tipped.
I've never been and never will be any type of racist, the guys are nice people but when you look further into the system, you can see how one sided it is.
Like I said, I can quit whenever I find a new job...
It' s just funny that when you imagine a business owner, you image a guy who STILL works his a$$ off, because he deserves that pay for working so hard! This is the other way around. The people who get paid the most are so afraid to do the work. The supervisor never, EVER cleans cars even for getting paid way more than everyone else. The thought of him going into the heat to clean a car like the rest of us grunts would send him into an outrage. Honestly, I REALLY get a long with them on a friendly level, I mean I could be friends with them because they are kind people with hard lives... we just clash at work.
It also goes without saying that they work their asses off and always have a smile on their face. I do too, but to be fair - their scenario is much more f*cked up than mine.
One last thing I've noticed.
When a car comes out, I'll always be standing there with the towels in my hands before anyone else (there is about 30 seconds of downtime if things get tied up). Oh no! But if it's a nice car "THOMAS! NO! YOU GET NEXT CAR! GET NEXT CAR!". Only if it's a nice car. They do it purposely. And by nice I mean like really high end Porsche or Ferrari.
Well, rant over.
