I am seriously considering quitting my corporate job and getting back into personal tutoring offering support for the following specialties : High school AP/SAT/SAT II mathematics, SAT writing, and college admission essays.
I have a bachelor and master degree from a nationally ranked university and graduated from a local magnet school. I was also quite the nerd in high school and have a proven track record of near perfect standardized exam scores.
I remember when I was in college I would do this during the summer for the son of a local business owner and made some pretty good money on a per hour basis. The pay was in cash and I figured if I put in the same work hours now, I would make roughly the same amount as my day job after tax.
Are there any other tutors on here? I hate to use the word "love", but I get much more satisfaction from teaching these kids and seeing my student develop. It gives me something to look at and feel proud of at the end of the day. Plus I can develop my own brand over the years.
I have been working in corporate America for a little more than a year. It was the natural thing for me to do--get a comfortable and well paying job in the city like the rest of my peers. I feel so lost right now. Everybody around me seems to think I am throwing away my degree and my future at climbing the corporate ladder. I work in the consulting industry and there is some prestige around the company I work for.
I live in NYC and am seeing a pretty strong demand for high quality standardized exam tutors.
My only question is if there are any possibility of turning this into a fast-lane business later on in the future after I develop my brand and a following of students? My first step right now is to convince myself that I can make a decent living off of my tutoring income.
It doesn't help that my father is retiring and my parents are depending on me to supplement their SS income (they don't have any savings). My plan is to stick with my company for another year and tutor on weeknights and weekends.
