The Hawthorne Studies was basically a bunch of research and investigations about management and human relations with the sponsorship of the National Research Council (NRC)
One experiment they did involved taking two groups of factory workers, one control group and one test group, and seeing the effects of increased lighting and worker productivity. As assumed, the productivity of the test group's workers grew with each 25 watt increment of light.
But what happened to the control group? Well, they too had a boost of productivity. Almost equal to that of the test group. What does this mean? It means that as individuals and groups we perform better when we are being watched.
This is called the Hawthorne Effect. It stresses the importance of social context on behavior and action....so go ahead and get yourself a mentor/friend/anyone to hold you accountable and check your progress and see how much more you accomplish!
