Building a Different Kind of Adult Family Home
Lately, I’ve been thinking about starting an Adult Family Home (AFH) and how to make it truly different. Many people are entering this industry, but I don’t want to create just another home—I want to build something that stands out and has a lasting impact.
Why I Want to Start an Adult Family Home
My experience as a caregiver has shown me both the beauty and struggles of this industry. Many elderly individuals don’t receive the love and respect they deserve. They’ve worked hard their entire lives, yet many end up feeling isolated. I want to create a home where they feel valued, where they can go out and enjoy life rather than just waiting for doctor’s appointments. I picture having a van to take them on outings, giving them a sense of freedom and joy.
Caregivers also face challenges. Many work long hours, are underpaid, and are responsible for multiple clients at once. I’ve seen providers take advantage of them, and I don’t want to build that kind of business. Instead, I want to create an environment where caregivers are treated fairly, paid well, and given a manageable workload so they can provide quality care without burnout.
How I Plan to Scale This Idea
Let’s say I start with one home serving 6–8 clients, and each client pays around $20,000 per month. That would give me a monthly income of around $120,000 to $160,000. While that sounds like a good income, there’s a limit to how much I can earn from that single home.
• I can’t increase the number of clients beyond what the home can handle.
• I can’t increase the pay for the same clients endlessly.
In that setup, the income is capped, and the only way to grow is by expanding. So, I’ve been considering three main approaches:
1. Opening Multiple Homes – Using profits from my first AFH to invest in additional homes, increasing the number of clients I can serve.
2. Creating a Franchise Model – Helping others start their own AFHs under a structured system that ensures quality care and business success.
3. Education and Mentorship – Teaching and guiding aspiring AFH owners, providing them with the knowledge and confidence to succeed.
Yet, I know this is something many people are already doing, and the industry is growing. Besides my passion for giving quality care to both residents and caregivers, I haven’t yet identified a strong, unique value that would truly set my AFH apart. I’ve seen homes where people struggle, and I know my mission is to provide better care—but beyond that, what will make my AFH different? What added value will I bring to the community?
Right now, I’m still exploring ideas and figuring out whether this will truly be a scalable business or if it will just turn into another form of self-employment.
What do you think about my idea? Do you have any suggestions that could help me make it even better? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
