xkcd (the geeky and often hilarious comic strip) just posted an e-frickin-normous chart listing all kinds of information about money -- some profound (cost of wars), some silly (cost of tuition at Hogwarts). Pretty entertaining. Big screen strongly recommended!!

In 2011 dollars, Gone with the Wind ($3.15B) earned more than the original 3 Star Wars movies combined ($1.6B, $778M, $686M = $3.06B).
Snow White ($2.8B) earned about as much as Titanic ($827M), Jaws ($1.067B), and E.T. ($997M) combined.
Bambi ($1.3B) earned almost twice as much as Avatar ($783M)!!
And those old movies sold those tickets during the depths of the Depression. Yow. But I guess those ticket dollars weren't competing with big-screen TVs, and computers, and iPads, and cellphone plans, and 2-3 cars per family, and a much larger house, and ...
