I remember someone wrote a thread saying how technology is changing the business world and it will make it harder to to create start-ups because more capital and expertise would be required. While I do believe we will see a lot more tech start-ups in the near future, I think almost everything will have a niche; so don't worry, people.
But this brings me to a more extensive realization. Our very lifestyles and life structures are being dramatically remapped by technology.
I will make a reference to MJ's book. In the story about the two brothers who are ordered by the Pharoah to construct a pyramid, in which one brother uses his own physical self to construct the pyramid, while the other uses leverage. And the brother who uses leverage does so by constructing a machine that will do the work so he doesn't have to exert himself physically, and it can be done faster. Therefore, his building of the pyramid takes less time and is far more comfortable.
And it's not just high-tech computerized gadgets either. One could say money is just a leverage of the barter system. Rather than taking the time to find someone who believes two horses are equal in value to one camel, the process is simplified by a currency which is universally understood to have X amount of value. Thus, the tiring process of philosophizing and examining the value of a camel compared to that of a horse is outsourced to a number which only exists because both parties agree to its value.
Could we conduct business the way we do today with the barter system? Could you order 200 zinc pills from a supplier in China in exchange for shipping that supplier a bushel of apples, a handbag, and aloe vera juice? Could you imagine the process that would be required to obtain those things to trade? I'm not saying it's impossible, but you would need a bottle of acetaminophen for every transaction just to deal with the headache. So, I'll say personally, I do believe money has made trade a lot easier for today's world of economics.
Now back to the subject of technology. Today, we still use the physical labour of people to assemble products in a factory, construct buildings, clean floors etc. etc. However, the human brain possesses far more creative potential and intelligence to have most of its waking hours to be dedicated to cleaning floors. And the flip-side to that is, humans are unpredictable and require constant attention and catering to. Technology on the other hand may need occasional maintenance, but is arguably far more reliable. You could have a machine clean floors for an entire day and it will do exactly what you programmed it to.
Could you imagine if we could leave machines to take care of these mundane tasks and allow the creativity of every person to flourish?? What could our world become if everyone was able to have an abundance of time with their family and allow their unique creative gifts to flourish? Would we have more peace? Would we have greater health? Would there be less people regretting spending their whole life in an office while their children grew up alone and raised by MTV and social networking? Perhaps in the very least, we could have a society where misery wasn't the norm amongst the working-class.
Of course, humans are still needed in the workforce. There are situations where a combination of emotional intelligence and problem-solving is required. Can machines be capable of emotional intelligence? Authentic emotional intelligence I sincerely doubt, but perhaps there is some way for it to be possible; but for now, I will state that this is a task best left for humans.
Everyone, we are moving towards an age where we can utilize technology as leverage to live more comfortable lives than we have ever been able to in history. This is a time for creativity and brilliance. We are long past the industrial revolution. We don't need schools to teach people who to go to a factory (or in office which is common today) and act as machines. The revolution will be a vibrant sunrise brought out by the brilliance of each and every one of you. Now matter what your industry is, your creativity and ambition for a better world will be the driving force to a brighter and more comfortable future. Stay true to yourself, and your mission, and you will ultimately lay the foundation for the most magnificent time in human civilization.
