Comings and Goings: Mesa Del Sol Golf Course under new ownership By Darin Fenger, features editor Yumasun.com
Golfers just landed a big hole-in-one with a major real estate deal.
A corporation with golf courses around the country recently sold Mesa Del Sol Golf Course to a couple who has moved to Yuma to run the business — and make it green again.
“Our intention is to live, work and play here,” said Steve Olafson, who co-owns the course with his wife, Shannon Mason.
The couple moved here from Scottsdale, where Olafson worked as a real estate investor and Mason worked as a real estate attorney.
“Mainly, I was a rehabber. That’s what I’ve done, add value to property and then sell,” Olafson said. “This is going to be a completely different process. We want this to be where we retire at some point.”
Mesa Del Sol Golf Course boasts 130 acres with a public club house and 18-hole course, the latter being designed by famed golfer Arnold Palmer. The course is temporarily closed for seasonal maintenance and is set to reopen Saturday, Oct. 17.
Until then, Olafson has one initial goal — to spruce up the grass.
“You drive past and you see weeds and dirt. The first thing we’re doing is getting the sprinklers working again and getting the grass trimmed the way it’s supposed to be trimmed. Our first goal is to make the course playable again.”
He’s also ordered new equipment, fixed existing equipment and has almost doubled the grounds crew.
After focusing on the course, subsequent phases will look at sprucing up the general landscaping and club house. Plans for the latter include adding dinner to the current breakfast and lunch offerings.
“We’re crazy. We’re lunatics,” Olafson said, chuckling. “It’s a lot of work, but we are used to working a lot. It’s what we’ve done forever.”
