I discovered @MJ DeMarco just about a week ago for the first time and read Millionaire Fastlane . Im about a 3rd into Unscripted . "Gurus" make me puke so lets just say I'm thankful for MJ's work and finding out about him.
I will state my challenge in this intro thread. Depending on if I can get some responses here that help, I wont clutter up the forum asking the same question.
I have been an idea person a good part of my life. The Control issue seems to be my stumbling block for my ideas. Like most maybe, I don't have any background, skillset or the money required to actualize most of my ideas on my own. Btw I'm not scared to share my ideas with someone I trust...I'm past the NDA paranoia thing. I have 3 ideas right now.
1) A simple mobile/tablet App (graphics intensive but not a game)
2) A payment software application for social media to help people monetize their followers - not just the Kardashians who have millions of followers.
3) a new Cell phone case
MJ says Control is part of the rules and I like this safety.
But here's the reason for this novella length post: All those ideas require different skillsets I don't have. And this leads to the frustration and Inaction....and Choice.
Choice 1: Idea potential vs 2) my ability to do execute myself and therefore Control. In almost every case I have no control because of an absent skillset or lack of investment capital.
Just Decide and do it? I guess I could, but my patience for wrong turns is at a zero tolerance level now. I'm 51 years old. A major issue is not being able to assess the level of skill or commitment to make an informed decision. If I get into a boxing ring I want to know who the other fighter is. If it's Mike Tyson that's a "no thanks". An assessemnt of ACTUAL, attainable skill level to COMPLETE the goal is what eludes me. For some reason I just cant grasp nuts and bolts and tech shit in particular these days. Could I program a unique payment and monetization system and integrate it with the social media companies? Could I make a "Paypal" from taking Udemy coding courses for example... I really dont think so.
Years ago I bootstrapped an online dating site from the ground up. Funny...about the time MJ was working on his Limo site I was probably working on this dating site....maybe. Anyway, I paid programmers to code it ($5000 on my credit card) and I directed the layout, features, and functionality of the website etc. I completed the website but in the end it failed because I was miserable with the other aspects of the business. I was also underfunded to properly market it. It was all about SEO and paid traffic back then. This was in the late 90's...before social media really existed as we know it today. I was ahead of the curve as far as online dating. I still remember the negative seeders at the time " there's free dating site out there" etc. But I understood the concept of value. I believe my instincts are good.
The lesson : I tried to do it all by myself and work parts of a business I had no aptitude or interest in. I'm good at the creative part...I suck at the nuts and bolts...it just melts my brain. Code...conversion rates...A/B testing....shoot me in the F'ing head. To my credit I did the MJ style grind and completed the website. That was one of the most satisfying accomplishments in my life. That was then though...and this is now. My cognitive ability and patience has degraded now and my chosen battlefield has to be right.
So, where does this leave me? No one is going to risk their money on someones thin air idea, generally. What do I bring to the table? No investment capital and no tradeskill expertise. Pretty much Jack. As all this pertains to the aforementioned ideas:
The Mobile App: You could say I could establish or demonstrate trust or need with the idea through a rudimentary mock up by self learning code....but the app is dependent on looking frickin' awesome to sell its value and therefor establish it's need...in my opinion. Its not a productivity app. I dont think a Udemy course is gonna give me that trust or "need data". And as far as I know...this idea is original...there's no app to compare it to. Pioneers get arrows in the back...I hear ya. But still
The social media monetization feature/payment system: Just way the F out of my league to attempt on my own coding or development wise. But I love the concept. Not sure if this idea has been tried but I certainly havent seen it demonstrated on social media platforms. It primarily targets Youtubers.
The Cellphone case - the Physical product: Probably the most feasible to attempt on my own. But still, the case itself most likely needs some engineering questions answered. And like the other two...investment capital.
I know I may get hated on for saying this but I need help or should I dare say a mentor. At 51 it's actually embarrassing saying that but Im serious about my future... the ego can take a back seat. Like I said I'm new on this forum and I hope I didnt break any rules by seemingly asking for partners or a mentor. Ive been involved in forums before and it can be an action faking time sink so I'm going to try and limit my time on here for that reason. Please feel free to reach out or reply.
