Or even other technical people! What discipline? Like it, hate it? What are you interests? Work for yourself, someone else (for now!), work doing something completely non-engineering?

I'll start:

I'm currently working on a Master's in Engineering (mechanical). I just love it; I'd do a PhD I like it so much, but don't want it enough right now that I'd rearrange my life to do so. I love technical work, math, programming, everything; the design, analysis, developing models, testing, going back and revising, testing again. Making the prototype, breaking it, blasting it with torches. Presenting the results. It's a fun process (most of the time!)

I work with composites mostly at a small firm (i.e., you run the gamut from the machine shop to the theory in your old textbooks to make numerical models).

Interests wise, I'm working on an engine now to make a log splitter I'm designing, and also getting ready to purchase some microcontrollers so I can hone my C and Python skills and maybe make a UAV helicopter. Or maybe something else, who knows.

I'll bite, I just got my BS in Mechanical this past May. I job hunted for a bit, sent out a ton of resumes but the market is on the weak side for entry level folk- especially in NYC. I applied to places all over the country but stopped in favor of getting into marketing to gain experience in that department before I pursue a real fastlane business. I am however going a little stir crazy working from home, so I'll most likely get myself a paid internship at some manufacturer so I can make some money on the side and be out and about while working on my ventures on my off time.

I really enjoy ME, but I can't do what some of my friends do- that being sitting in a cubicle for 8 hours a day designing aerospace related and other parts. I like a mix of manufacturing and design, when in school I manufactured hydrogen fuel cell components and did all the work from start to finish. I enjoy the whole process, design/ prototyping/ and CNC programming+ manufacturing.

My interests lie mainly in the automotive world, currently I've got my 95 Trans Am (my avatar) that I've been slaving over for a year now- and recently been neglecting due to pursuing my business/ career ventures. As much as I enjoy it, it takes up too much time and money, both of which are precious if I want to focus on business. Apart from that, I've gotten into fitness recently and hit the gym 4-5 nights a week. I"m treating both the gym and the fastlane similarly, pushing myself in both areas and experiencing growth slowly but surely- persistence is key :)

Hey Tom!

Too bad about the job search (or maybe not so bad. You never know what the future holds, right?). The entry-level market is tough, a lot of my classmates from undergrad actually stayed for grad school to avoid the market. Quite a few never found engineering jobs. I'd agree with your assessment about the "tunnel vision" some engineering jobs have; couldn't stand it either.

Were the hydrogen fuel cell components for a Capstone project?

Do you have any idea for your fastlane business now?
