Let me preface this by saying that I don't normally watch a lot of TV, so I'm not that up-to-date with commercials.
I turned the TV on today to have a show on in the background, and I caught two commercials that I thought were pretty telling. The first was for Avon, and pitched the concept of selling Avon as a hedge against losing your job. "I am my own boss." "I make money with Avon to help pay bills." Shortly after that commercial, I saw one for California Psychics. "New clients only $1/minute."
What these two commercials mean to me is two fold:
1. People are looking for a way to supplement their income in a way that they have some sort of control over.
2. People are seeking hope.
Seems like home-based businesses/affiliate/MLM are having a resurgence in popularity. So what do this mean to us? Well, perhaps it means considering an affiliate program with a home-based element to it--like Avon.
As far as selling hope goes, the only thing that sits well with me would be some sort of total life coaching program. Perhaps financial education, perhaps low cost support groups. ...There are a lot of people in pain out there, financially and emotionally. The opportunity I see is that people need guidance and support. Provide this service in "real" way and their opportunity for it to be a win/win.
Have you noticed commercials changing? What opportunities do you see here? Do you think you'll modify your business model to adapt to these opportunities? ...Interesting times, very interesting.
