I am in the process of sourcing a server system for my fathers office for between 5-10 employees to centralise file storage and reduce the occurrence of lost files and duplications.
It must also serve as a mail server that receives and stores email centrally and allows each person to have their own email address on our domain and finally it must also serve as a removable backup system. 1.5tb of storage would suffice to hold current data and give plenty of room for growth and we'd like an exact copy of this data to be written to the backup system daily.
Does anyone have a similar setup? To me this whole network thing is like learning another language but with the help of google I am beginning to grasp the basics so any advice in general or specific recommendations for a setup would be welcome as would feedback on individual hardware (your experiences with certain servers, routers, gigabit switches, nas devices, raid arrangements, software etc..).
One question I have is to do with the main hard drive. If we have two 750gb disks which contain Windows Server 08, mail and files and every day make an exact copy of the main disks to a removable 1.5tb NAS is that enough to ensure data security in the event of a failure of our main harddisk or do we need to have further redundancy?
Note: I did a forum search for file server, mail server and office server but most of the results were not relevant and were instead about web hosting. I am also planning on hearing input from local IT companies but I want to get a general idea now so I am not sold a system of insufficient specs or otherwise one that is of too high spec for small scale use.
