Tim Cook just announced that Apple will be refusing the FBI's orders. The FBI is intending to use legal acts that would alarmingly expand its authority into millions of iPhone's around the globe. They are demanding that Apple creates a new version of iOS that will give them absolute entry into any iPhone the government wants. The control the FBI has asked for is equivalent to a master key, capable of opening hundreds of millions of locks - from restaurants and banks to stores and homes. This would let them intercept your messages, access your health records or financial data, track your location, or even access your phone’s microphone or camera without your knowledge.
In plain terms, the FBI is asking Apple to hack their own customers and undermine decades of security advancements.
Apple is publicly challenging and simultaneously refusing these demands for a backdoor.
"We can find no precedent for an American company being forced to expose its customers to a greater risk of attack."
"We are challenging the FBI’s demands with the deepest respect for American democracy and a love of our country. We believe it would be in the best interest of everyone to step back and consider the implications." - Tim Cook
