If you're like me, this forum adds more and more life-changing books to your wish list every day.
But, like many of you, I am boot-strapping my business, and I don't have the cash to buy dozens of new books.
Thankfully, there's another way...
This little-known trick has been around forever, and it's not a secret, but even the reading teachers at my school have never heard of it. It's called the Inter-Library Loan.
Now I know what you're thinking... Libraries have thousands of books for free, but never the ones I actually want to read.
Well, what you didn't know about libraries is that 72,000 of them in 170 countries have connected their inventories into the WorldCat catalog.
And you can get any book, from any of them, for FREE.
Here's how:
1) From your library's homepage. Find a link for "Interlibrary Loan". Mine is easy to find, right at the top, but yours might not be.
2) Enter your search for Author or Title. Make sure the drop-down says "Libraries Worldwide" For this search, I'll be looking for TMF .
3) You'll see a list of possible matches and different editions, select the one you want. If you're looking for TMF in Polish... there's a library in Poland that can hook you up!
4) You'll see a list of every library out of the 72,000 that have that book in their catalogs, sorted by nearest distance to your city. It looks like there are 63 libraries that have TMF, so all you need to do is click the "Request Item" button and type in your library card number on the next page.
After that, a copy of the book will be delivered to your home library and you will be emailed when it is ready to pickup. Requests that I've put in usually arrive in 5-7 days. So far, I have been able to request every obscure business or chess book that I have searched for.
However, there are a few things you need to know:
1) You can't have any fines on your card to put in an interlibrary request
2) Interlibrary books cannot be renewed (however, the check-out time is a week or two longer than a normal book)
3) The fines are larger than normal if you don't return an interlibrary book on time.
And that's it!
So my challenge to you: Get the next two books on your wish list ordered for free, TODAY.
