Hello everyone! Thank you MJ for writing such an entertaining and direct, informative book!!
Right now I am just getting into the process of opening a painting shop on Etsy. I have been practicing/purchasing materials, but I don't have any paintings up yet (I probably look like a fool here lol) I want to sort a few more things out first. I plan to do dynamic canvas paintings of the newest and flashy-est sports cars (there is little to no competition for good modern handpainted cars from what I've researched) and potentially do various commissions. I had a commissioned drawing business a year ago during the summer, but I stopped because my photorealistic style of drawing became too tedious. However, people have always raved about my art, so that informed me that I have a desirable style. I've found already that painting is MUCH better in multiple ways. I am also willing to learn to paint other things if my sports car idea doesn't take off. I should mention I'm majoring in Graphic Design, and doing this on the side for now.
I know what you're all thinking. I realize this will most likely be more of a "thousand-air fastlane" rather than millionaire, but art can work on a magnitude AND partially scale level, due to the internet. I'm hoping to lean towards magnitude once I'm established, to lessen my workload.
Here is where I'm at a loss. Can handmade art further be automated? I have already worked out 2 ways to contribute to this: encourage people to buy prints and make originals quite a bit more expensive, (I found a website that will both print and ship straight to the customer, all I do is send a file of the picture, they even print on canvas) and I found a nearby place that will not only package my paintings for me, but also send them with whatever carrier is cheapest for it. The only bad thing is that I have to drive over, but it's only 10 minutes away (maybe I could say I'll ship every Friday or something). I figure if I start getting more requests than I can handle, that means I should raise prices a little.
I also can't seem to find a way to provide great customer service without risking too much loss/giving people more chances to take advantage of me. These other Etsy sellers have the most superb service. I'm thinking I'll have to be valuable some other way.
I realize probably no one here is an artist haha, but any help at all is GREATLY appreciated!
P.S. Tell me a cool sports car you would like to have hanging in your room!
Thanks!!
Nicole
