I was thinking about this for a long time, but I still can't figure it out.. I believe it comes down to personality and natural behaviour, but I am sure you can master any skill if you identify the key aspects, focus and practice. I haven't found any topic here, relating to this issue, but I do know some people in person, that have a similar problem (not many though).
To say it simply.. I have an issue controlling my emotions on demand - especially laughter.
I cannot really control my laughter and I have a stupid smirk, or laugh when it's absolutely inappropriate. Serious situations, business environment, regular family conversations...
Not really a good move to laugh when sealing a deal with a business partner, asking bos for a raise etc.
Even in situation when it's ok, I keep laughing much longer than other people, even if I don't want to.
I know this might sound stupid, but I am convinced it's really an important part of the whole self-improvement / fastlane game to develop your character traits alongside your other 'hard' skills.
Here's a good example of what I'd would like to achieve..
He does something stupid (that naturally forces him to smile) but in a split second, he can be back to dead serious again.
So far I have noticed that breathing deeply and focusing my energy into the abdominal / pelvic area (rather than chest as usual) is somewhat beneficial. Also I am really conscious about all of the situations when I have the urge to laugh / smile and try to suppress it and stay focused and serious.
Also being on caffeine and/or in a fasted state helps a bit, naturally (maybe because of the increased focus and alertness).
I also realize that mediation could help with overall focus and having that deep, calm seriousness - that 99% of successful people have. However I wasn't able to figure out, if this comes from the realisation that they have finally success (and wealth) or if it's the other way round - they had to develop their character and control emotions, which allowed them to become successful.
I appreciate this is a lengthy post and quite a broad idea. I'll be glad to join the discussion, if you guys could share your own experience / point of view on this topic.. Perhaps how you were able to develop that childish, happy, 'ungrounded' personality into a rock-solid, serious, focused businessman personality.
And we can all benefit from it in some way
