I was on facebook the other day, which is rare for me. I'd gotten a message and logged in to reply. I couldn’t help but notice this story, which was the very first thing in my newsfeed.
This seems to be almost the opposite of the 30k millionaire in TMF , who has “90 grand of image and two bucks of common sense.” This guy isn’t after the faux wealth image, but is instead broadcasting his frugality, and making it seems like it’s really just about being free to live life the way they want to (without house debt), when he’s really just accepting mediocrity (living in an 8x20 “house”).
I think this is a decoy, or illusion, of sorts. To truly live your “dream life,” even if you “don’t want money,” the Fastlane life is what frees up your time, which is what people were after in the first place. Having all the free time you want means you aren’t working, so you don’t need any more money, so you must already have all that you’re going to need.
It seems like they’re looking for some of the benefits of a Fastlane life, but are stuck in the slowlane. The guy is a webdesigner, isn’t rich, and one of the captions to the pictures mentions how, “Instead of focusing on paying off debt, they can instead spend their money on leisure and travel.”
He also says that “Inhabiting such a small space will force me to live in a simpler, more organized and efficient way,” but I can’t help wondering if he’s just trying to justify how this small of a house was a true benefit for him, because of the behavior pattern changes he thinks it will produce in him and NOT because he was too cheap or whatever else to actually get a house.
Also, the way he says it will “force me” to live in a more organized and efficient way seems to imply that he thinks he wouldn’t be able to do this without the “house. Isn’t that an excuse for being unable to discipline himself?
There are many similar “tiny house” stories, and I’d like some Fastlaner opinions on this, since I’m wondering if I’m being too harsh..
Edit: looks like I had everything hyperlinked. Fixed now.
