You can prove there is demand for your ebook/service/saas before even creating it!
Here is an ingenious way I came across today:

The cost to do this does not need to be more than $5!
Just outsource the design work to someone on fiverr.com
Then join targeted groups on facebook/reddit/forums etc..... and ask if people would want your free report.
Chances are if they want the free report, you've stumbled upon a problem that they would be willing to pay someone to get solved.

The guy had a facebook post on a group page that said something like: "If you want a copy of my ebook that explain how to XYZ then enter your email below" and some 100+ people typed in their email address.
All he had was a short description and a big image (not link) of his ebook cover.
