I dont know how well you guys know urbanspoon (www.urbanspoon.com), Im curious about it.
Basically, it a website that lets users rate and review restaurants and bars in most major cities in the world. I know form owning a cafe that it was crucial to get as many good reviews here as possible because it meant the difference between good and bad business.
Yet, there are also literally hundreds of other websites that rate all sorts of businesses and my cafe features on all of them, with mostly one or two reviews that arent helpful at all and doesnt really affect anything. examples could be google business and the yellow pages. In melbourne, urbanspoon is the go to place when you want to know if a restaurant is good or not.
My questions are:
- how do these websites make money? They dont charge businesses or consumers anything. They have minimal ads
- How do they get started? how did the first review go on? How did people know about it before it became popular? why did people choose to start populating it with reviews and ratings before all restaurants were even in its database? did it start locally in one city?
- What sets urbanspoon apart from the hundreds of other directories and blogs that rate restaurants? how did they raise above the noise?
