Buy a Distressed Business?

People buy distressed homes and flip them, there are companies/VC that specialize in buying companies and turning them around. What about individuals buying small businesses that are distressed? It would seem in this economy there would be plenty of golden nuggets where small business owners can't support themselves, don't have the cash flow, whatever and are simply ready to get out.

It seems there would be an opportunity for someone to come in with an objective view (business owners are often too emotionally attached to see the big picture) and "make-over" a small business. Negotiate down the lease, remove dead weight, whatever it might take..

Thoughts? What would you recommend for finding these types of businesses?
