1. I received a quote from a company in China for a product I need to have shipped to Vancouver, Canada. Each product weights 12kg, and has the following dimensions: 41cm x 42cm x 54 cm. I will be shipping 50 of these items. Apparently my total cost of shipping these items is $187.77

Is this a miscalculation? Or is this the real cost of freight shipping?

2. Where can I learn more about Canadian customs and the laws regulating the import/export of products to and from Canada.

Are the products being shipped by ship? What is the time period 3-4 weeks?

Regarding customs, look up customs broker in the Vancouver yellow pages, there should be hundreds of custom brokers in Vancouver since it's a port city and most if not all Asian products enter Vancouver port.

As long as it's not electric, medical or food then you don't need to worry about laws.

Just import the product, pay the import tax that is required and hire a customs broker to do the paper work.
