OK I wanted to start a thread about something MJ wrote in his book and I have been really meditating on this metaphor.
Making money is a lot like trying to catch a cat. It's funny because when I moved into a new house I had to chase down a cat. I was chasing it for days. I would run after it and all over the house getting frustrated. I couldn't catch the dang thing. I had my kids stand in doorways so it couldn't escape in certain places. It would run under my legs or jump over me. I would dive and the harder I tried the harder the cat tried to avoid me.
It's like working 9-5 and then 8-6 and then 7-7 and the harder you work and the more tired you become you can't seem to make headway and you can't seem to make any money.
The trick is not to work harder but to work smarter. You need to stop, do some research, and learn how to ATTRACT the cat. How do you lure a cat to come to you? Give it what it wants.
It was about the time I gave up when it was my daughter who told me, "Dad, why don't we stop chasing it and give it some food?"
This made me realize the cat would never come to me unless it WANTED to or NEEDED to.
Just like in business, customers aren't going to give you money unless you provide them something they want or need. You can't deceive them. Like the cat, it will find a way under your legs or around you.
So, I left the cat there without any food for 2 days. By then it was hungry. I then walked into the vacant house with some cat food and I placed it in the corner of a room and waited behind the door. Within 5 minutes the cat came in to eat and I shut the door. I grabbed the cat and placed it in the travel crate and off I went with my prize.
I thought about how I spent hours chasing them darn thing and then once I changed my focus, I prepared myself and it only took 5 minutes.
So the question is "are you going to spend your life chasing money? or are you going to provide something of value and attract money?"
This is a simple concept but it's amazing how many people look inwards at themselves when starting a business and not outwards at the clients. What will draw them in?
