The key to success for most businesses is visibility.
If people don't know your business is out there, your limited to the power of word of mouth. Not a very scalable method.
The internet is the fastest and most economical way to let thousands of people know about your business and what it does. Those thousands of potential visitors are called "traffic," and it is the holy grail of every website, internet ad and forum. Why? because traffic can be turned into paying customers or members.
Internet advertising can get very expensive depending upon the complexity of your project. Website builders, SEO companies, graphic designers, ppc campaigns etc. can cost in the tens of thousands to hire if you are trying to compete against well established companies with sites that have high page rank and aged domains.
But as a new business why would you want to?
There are economical ways to build websites or pages, get them hosted cheaply, and use SEO friendly links, images, and content to bring the coveted "traffic" to your site in hopes of potentially making them your customers.
Building and hosting your website.
If your not a programer and you want a great looking site that you can have up in minutes use wordpress. There are several themes and plugins you can use to make your site unique and clean looking. I personally use the Socrates theme. (didn't know if I could put aff link here so I didn't)
Hostgator's baby plan is all you need to start out with for hosting. I think it's like $5-$7 bucks per month for a shared plan and I usually buy my domains from Go Daddy then point the DNS over to Hostgator and it's there on my cpanel within seconds.

Besides the obvious Twitter and Facebook pages, one powerful platform that not many marketers are utilizing is Squidoo. Google loves a Squidoo lens that is set up properly and many times lenses outrank sites for competitive keywords.
Squidoo itself has a PR 7 and that's amazing. A word of caution. The reason Google likes Squidoo is because they have strict rules when it comes to uniqueness of content. I had a lens banned because a few paragraphs matched someone else's content too closely. But it's free to join, and they have great modules to help your lens look good and you can make several lenses about many different topics. Free.
So if you don't have the cash for a website and hosting, build a lens with a relevant keyword related to your business niche. They are free and look pretty darn good.
Hope this helps.
