I saw a post today saying that one of his huge barriers to entry in a job was not having a college degree. I wanted to write this post to share some of my experiences after having graduated college and being in the work force for over a year. Hopefully I can add value to your experience on the forum.
I graduated with a double major in accounting and finance. I believed that all the hard work (long hours and ridiculously hard classes) would lead to many opportunities after college. I was wrong and I went into $12,000 of student loan debt. Dumb!
I since read many books and spent a lot of time on personal development. The way society forms us into what they want us to be is crazy. It's still hard for me to fathom all the lies.
Earlier last year I held a corporate job at $34k a year. Nothing like the $50-60k I was told about in school! Guess what I did? I worked in a cubicle 9 hours a day answering phone calls. Hahaha this wasn't the dream, but a nightmare.
A degree did get me a sales job after. I sold $10,000 printers and got an average commission of $80 per. Again not what I expected.
After all of that I decided it was entrepreneurship or bust. I tried my product as an ebook and the market wasn't interested. Oh well on to the next idea.
Now I am looking to work corporate again, just for a year or so. But I have seen how the markets work in colleges and how society plays an impact. My employment director at the school sends me a bunch of jobs for $30k/year. They all want you to have experience. Or you can do an accounting internship for $10/hour. It is incredible that I fell for all the bs.
The entrepreneurship path has to be the way to go.
