Hello.
I'm 21 years old, about to enter my senior year of College. I find throughout college I have been really apathetic about finding an internship/job that could turn into a career because I would really much rather be in control of my financial future, especially with how the economy is looking.
I am an Information Technology major, so I have general programming skills (Python, HTML, CSS, JS, SQL) as well as various technical skills (Linux, servers, hardware, etc.). I feel as though this skillset would provide me with plenty of opportunities for starting a fastlane business, but I'm struggling to come up with something.
Recently I've started doing freelance web design for some people I know, just to get extra change in my pockets. I feel very confident that I could grow a web design business if I pursued it, because the quality of my work is high. My concern, however, is that this model may violate some of MJ's 5 commandments. Here's my analysis:
Need - Passed
With everything going on, online presence is huge for businesses.
Entry - ?
Web design is abundant on freelance websites, but I find much of the work to be subpar, even with WordPress.
Control - Passed
You get to pick your clients.
Scale - Failed
Work is tied directly to time, so scale would be limited by how much work I can put in. Magnitude, however, could be manipulated.
Time - Failed
Again, income is tied to how much work I do.
Curious on what you're thoughts on that are.
I am also considering the idea of starting a web design company where we handle everything. This would probably be a more local business.
Say, for example, you are a church, and you hire me for a website. I would come and take the appropriate pictures needed for the website, find hosting, build the website, and then maintain the website for you. One payment for building the website, and monthly payments for hosting and maintenance.
There is a degree of passive income with this idea, since I imagine maintenance for a website would be virtually nothing. If I use a hosting service like BlueHost, I don't have to worry about hackers or downtime because that's their problem. However, this isn't the kind of Fastlane business that could make me rich.
I've also been learning app design using the Flutter language. I have what I think to be a pretty good app idea, and as far as I can tell it hasn't been done before. Uncertain about it's profitability though. More of a want service than a need.
Any tips or advice would be appreciated. I don't have a super clear direction yet, but I'm pursuing these two ideas unless I can think up something else. I haven't developed a "passion" for "helping the world" yet, rather I just want to get rich enough to hike like crazy while my body is capable.
Excited to be here! Thanks!
