I’ve won a seat at the big boys’ table. The big mahogany table where the stakes are high and the rewards astronomical. In light of the recent buzz of attention attributed to selling and specifically selling in the construction industry, I figured I’d offer a glimpse into my own recent dealings given they are in that precise niche (though I use the term “niche” lightly given the $7 trillion global market that is construction).
I don’t make this progress thread to remain accountable -- what a load of utter crap. If you have to look to other people to hold you accountable, you won’t make it far in sales. If you can’t keep yourself motivated, go back to that oh-so-comfortable cubicle and plug away at excel spreadsheets all day because that’s where you belong (though this may sound negative, it is simply where some people are meant to be).
No, I made this progress thread because I want to look back at it and everyone who posts on it and see who decides to take the challenge and the necessary action required to get what they want. This includes meeting the right people to take you to the point where you can be a killer. There’s knowledge that comes with the industry, so between myself and others around the forum (looking at @Ubermensch and @Thiago Machado), start learning. Then the fun part comes. The “doing” part. It makes me sick to my stomach when I see somebody talking without anything to show for it.
A couple things that have become abundantly clear to me in the last year or so:
Regarding this post, I expect to see posts only from people who are willing to go all the way. If you adhere to the “4 Hour Work Week” mentality, get out. If you want someone to hand you the glorious keys to the kingdom without doing any work, get out. If any of this offends you, get out. Prepare to be offended in sales, and also prepare to quickly learn how to not give a f*ck. It’ll be necessary.
As for me, I wanted in. I wanted that seat at the big table, I somehow met the right people, and I have gotten that seat. I can not overstate the importance of your networking efforts. Having said that, if you are not willing to devote 10+ hours a day to whatever it is you want to sell, don’t reach out to players until you are. You are not worth their time.
So in short I have a guaranteed six figures this year. And if I was an action-faking imbecile, I’d end the year with six figures. Thank the Lord I’m not an action faking imbecile, though, because I expect to add a couple more zeros to that number. I have been given the opportunity, and I am attacking that opportunity with every last ounce of energy in my bones.
Now, it’s time I cut this post off – I simply no longer have the time to spend hours typing. Hopefully this thread will serve its purpose of giving the true hustlers out there the kick in the a$$ they need to grab a seat at the table.

A couple things that have become abundantly clear to me in the last year or so:
1. Connections. You’ve all heard that “it’s all about who you know”. You may dismiss it as a cliché, but I’ve found it is 100% valid if you want the opportunity to be anything above average. Meeting the right people in the right places with the right influence is what it takes to gain a seat with the big players.
2. Be a Sponge. Absorb everything you possibly can about whatever industry you are targeting. The more you soak in, the more you become confident in your own knowledge, the more that confidence is portrayed in your mannerisms, the more deals you close, the more money you make.
3. Lastly, Action. Prove to the powerful connections mentioned above that you are worth their time and money. Take every step necessary to make it clear that you will not only take what they have given you to heart, but that you will capitalize on it with extreme ferocity that will enrich both yourself and your mentor. This is how you keep your seat at the table.
