Companies that build prototype products: Recommendations?

I'm in the middle of designing a product, the idea for which I came up with a few days ago. I was planning on building a crude prototype myself, just to make sure it works the way I think it's going to work. However, I will next have to get a production-ready prototype built, and as I'm new to this process, I'd like to find out if anyone has recommendations for a company that builds prototypes and has a good reputation (quality of build/reasonable prices), or at least knows where to look for such a company. Also, I'm pretty sure a lot of overseas outfits would do this for a low price, but I have a feeling that working with a local company (in my case, in the San Jose area) would be easier and may be less expensive in the long run. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, as well. Thanks.
