May has been a very good month for my carpet cleaning business. Perhaps somewhat fortunately, next week is almost completely empty. Some people have suggested that I use this free time to promote my business. Though I value my time more than my money, the reverse is true when it comes to marketing. Wasting my time doesn’t impact my ability to survive more than wasting my money on useless advertising.
That being the case, what grass roots methods (free or almost free) can I use my free time next week to promote my business? Here are some examples of what I tried last year.
1) Huge fliers delivered to 500 homes.
2) Handwritten letters delivered to 500 homes.
3) Postcards delivered to 500 homes.
4) Doorhangers delivered to 500 homes.
5) Networking with other business owners.
6) Doorknocking.
None of those methods generated a single good client. One marketing guru told me to ask my prospects directly why they didn’t respond to me. The vast majority said that my material looks like junk mail. I would think that a handwritten letter would have gotten around that, but apparently not.
Someone once said that I was unwilling to go through the trial and error (mostly error) of building a business. Here you are. This is what I had tried last year, and it did zilch for me. What am I supposed to do? How can I possibly determine what I did wrong? All I know is that it didn’t work for me, at all. Isn’t the definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again, yet expecting different results?
I’d be happy to devote my free time next week to promoting my business, if I honestly felt that it would work. Prior experience has shown me otherwise, and it has been very challenging for me to overcome that. What else can I do? High gas prices are pinching people’s disposable income, on which my business is dependent, but it's too late to turn back now.
Thanks for the discussion.
