My name is Ken, and I am a Producer & Director from Singapore who is working in a billion-dollar/year revenue MNC. I'm paid well, receive good benefits and have great co-workers. Reading MJ's book really changed the way I looked at things - I guess the most important lesson I learnt was not to settle until I reached my dreams.
My "red pill" moment came when a product that I released grossed huge for my company. I directed everything from concept to completion with almost zero input from my bosses, but naturally had no clauses in my contract that included revenue share. None of that money went into my pocket. After this success, my reputation within the industry grew substantially and so did my compensation. Strangely enough, I felt no sense of elation, even though my friends and family tell me to be satisfied and work hard in my new role.
"Get your head down, work hard for your bosses and be thankful for your good salary."
Unfortunately, even with a better compensation I am nowhere near to being financially stable. I'm still struggling to finance my wedding, am $500,000 deep in housing loans and can't afford to buy a car. I realized that with a $200-1000 pay-rise per year, my debts would be cleared and I would finally be able to retire - by 60. I couldn't wait that long. I didn't want to settle.
I'm currently building my own product on the side while keeping my day-job, and have given myself a target to join the Fastlane millionaire club in a years time. It's actually becoming difficult to focus at work as I keep thinking of my side project, but I'm being professional and work only during after-hours. How do you guys handle the split attention?
Once again, its a great pleasure to be part of this forum. Nice to meet all of you!
