Drinking from the fire hose of email marketing

I wasn't even sure how to search this to see if this topic has been covered. But in my journey to grow into the Fastlane entrepreneur I want to be, I have an almost endless stream of books, podcasts and emails coming in every day.
Here's my question, is email marketing dying? I still struggle with understanding how email marketing really works. But it seems to me that everyone is being BURIED by it. So much so that they are deleted wholesale, even if the person is relatively interested in the topic at hand. We all have a media blitz being hurled at us at every waking moment. And it occurs to me that there will likely be a lot of Fastlanes created by those who are preparing now for whatever replaces email marketing. Maybe FB Messenger marketing? Or SMS Text marketing? I don't know. But while I completely see the value in building a massive audience that is predisposed and prepped for my product, I am just not sure that email is the primary vehicle that we should be focusing on.
