Hey there!
I am currently planning on developing an e-ink display based notepad. Basically I would like to develop a product similar to kindle, but instead of the ability of reading books on it I would make it into a portable, electronic notepad. It would be cheaper and more accessible than ipads and other multiuse tablets, also lighter, with a longer battery life and the option to save notes, port them to a pc and quickly cycle through saved notes on the tablet itself. I've done soem research on the market and I haven't been able to find a good example about what I'm talking about yet. There is one tablet that is still in development and is expected to hit the market in 2012, but their website is not evel working so I'm not sure about where that's at. They have about 16k fans on facebook so there are people actually interested in similar products.
If possible, I would focus on multicolor e-ink, although I do still have to do some research on how expensive that would be - if it is too expensive, I would just start with black and white. And even if there will already be one tablet on the market when I release mine, mine can always be better and more personalized. I would also make different versions according to people's needs - a businessman might need a smaller, very portable version that he can put into a pocket like a regular notepad (without losing the pages, having to buy a new one, etc.), a student might need a larger one for taking their notes, like A4. In the end, perhaps even designers or project managers might want one in order to be able to make sketches on the way, without having to carry a graphic pen everywhere.
I still have to do research on this, and as a part of research, I would like to ask you - would you need something like that? Would you find it useful? Would you ever buy it? The prices would have to be low, about $100 or less for a basic model. It really depends on the cost of the materials etc.
The other thing I want to ask you is - does anyone have any experience with e-ink? Do you know where I could order a development kit for it?
Thank you in advance for your time,
Primzi
