Trying to figure out the realities of advertising an ecommerce website. I keep hearing two different things and wondering your opinion on what you think the reality of media buying for an ecommerce store.
Say you have a physical, shippable product being sold via your own ecommerce website. You start buying banner advertising via facebook ads, google ads and other various CPM/CPC methods.
Are you expecting an ROI and/or how soon? Are you buying banners to build a brand and then looking for an ROI after a couple years? Do you expect that you start running banner ads and they convert right from the get go its just a matter of fine tuning to improve ROI?
How long are you thinking it should take from first launching banner ads to getting a positive ROI? From what I read on this forum people expect to start launching campaigns for $100 on FB and think they are or saying they are getting $1000 in sales right away. Next thing I read is how start up companies with one physical product spend 100's of thousands to launch before seeing even $1 of revenue.
I have heard everything from it taking no time to a couple years once you have built familiarity with your brand. Just because people want or need something doesnt mean as soon as they see your ad the first time they immediately trust you and want it.
So what is the reality vs perception here? Should you get a close to positive ROI response from banner ads or does it take years of being in front of people visually?
I remember having a private conversation with a now banned member here and he told me that he and his partners routinely launched websites spending over 200k with banner ads to get in front of people. I still find it hard to believe that it could take that much to successfully launch an online ecommerce store.
But maybe it does take that much to build a brand its just that most people dont have that amount right off that bat and need to throw 1k/mo into advertising for 200 months before becoming profitable.
What am I missing here? What is to be normally expected?
thanks in advance for any opinions...
