Hey fastlaners,

I have a tough life decision to make at this point and wouldn't mind bouncing some ideas I know with some people who actually know what I'm talking about (that's where you guys come in, if you want)

background: I am currently enrolled in a 3 year Business Administration diploma program at a local college. I have long been considering switching into the 2 year Entrepreneurship and small business management diploma, however I don't know which field will benefit me more. My passion will always be for entrepreneurship, but business admin gives the skills required to get a job after college should I need one to pay the bills. Most people I talk to say that the business admin will give me all the skills I need and more, and that if I am meant to be an entrepreneur, I can figure that side out on my own. However the Idea that has been bouncing around my head is if I major in finance, I will know a whole lot about finance but absolutely nothing about entrepreneurship besides what I learn from books and the internet already.

Business Admin Pros:
  • good quantitative skills (I enjoy math)
  • respected by employers, good chance of a job after college/whenever needed
  • prepares students to get industry certifications, (CGA, CMA, CA, CFA)
  • can easily transfer credits to get a bachelors of commerce and then later an MBA if needed
  • If I can get a job in the finance industry and gain experience I can transfer that experience to something like consulting in risk assessment or helping entrepreneurs and small businesses in some way
  • superior focus on accounting that will keep my books in order until I can afford staff
Business Admin Cons:
  • does not touch on the subject of entrepreneurship at all
  • extremely dry, boring, tons of homework
  • focused on job preparation (pro/con)
  • I don't really want to wear a suit and work downtown, the idea depresses me (or even worse.. move to .... Toronto:depressed: haha just kidding Torontonians you are alright)
  • none of the majors interest me particularly much besides finance because of course once I am a wealthy entrepreneur I will want to manage my money properly to make it go far and retire early.(pro/con)
  • gives me no time to focus on building my business, workload stresses me out.
  • useless courses (to me), like project/database management, and "oratory" (I am already a good public speaker)
Entrepreneurship pros:
  • courses are actually relevant to my interests/goals
  • shorter, easier program
  • I don't actually need much money to be happy, I DO need freedom
  • focus on market research, business plans, idea validation, getting funding.
  • opportunity to meet and network with like-minded people
Entrepreneurship cons:
  • Not as respected/needed by employers (I want to move out of my parents house some day soon)
  • I feel I won't respect myself as much if I don't do the harder program which I am easily capable of (this is actually pretty important though it sounds silly)
  • If I switch now after 1 year of business admin I will still be spending about the same amount of time in school finishing the entrepreneurship program, maybe one semester less
  • inferior focus on accounting, bookkeeping, and quantitative skills
  • Will have to go back and complete the business admin if I do want an MBA some day
  • only finance course is "managing your finances"...seems super basic
  • could end up feeling bored/unmotivated by lack of challenge
anyways that's all I've got for now I suppose. Sorry for the wall of text, I hope someone here will share some wisdom with me, as I am just teetering and can't quite figure out the right thing to do. I value education a lot, and want to have a formal one, just don't know which is the right choice.

Thanks!
