How do you achieve executional excellence?
The fine line of due-diligence and preparation gets obscured by action-faking and the fear of imperfect kinetic execution. We all want to strive for excellence over mediocrity. But sometimes, we have to start with mediocrity or else we run the risk of never starting because some day... [insert current project] will be excellent.
How do you measure, evaluate, or otherwise confirm that its time to engage the market? And how do you validate your confidence in what you're doing when you know its not the masterpiece that you want it to be?
MJ's story about the early days of limos.com comes to mind. He was making websites for other businesses to pay his bills when his friend told him to turn email inquiries into money. Obviously, his website couldn't have been excellent at this point, but was it mediocre? Was it excellent for what it was at the time?
The market response of people actually using his website must've been the feedback loop to keep working at it. That said, is excellence necessary in the beginning? Or is it barrier to execution? Is the path to excellence in one project paved with the mediocrity of its infancy?
Just some thoughts I've had as of late.
