Greetings fastlaners,
Two years ago I created a group on facebook that allowed students to trade their old used textbooks. It started as that and today it has evolved to being the main source of information for students and alumni in the university. As of today, I have kept a low profile on the page and my main focus was to keep it as civil as possible. Weekly growing by almost 100+ members getting close to 10k members, I believe this is a great opportunity for anyone with an entrepreneurial journey. I have some concerns regarding the possibility of not only monetizing the page but also creating a channel of information for a very unorganized university community. First off, the name of the page includes the acronym of the university, I fear that if I intend to start making money off this, the university will act against me and try to remove my power from the group. I have thought about changing the name but Facebook doesn't allow name changes after the group has reached over 5k members. I have brainstormed possible opportunities I could use the page for, but the fear of losing it all leads me to not take initiative. I am not associated in any way with the university and Ive heard that they actually recommend students to join the page through their freshman summer camps.
One of my ideas is to promote local business through the page as I know my group is specified to a very particular demographic in the city. I've thought about promoting photographers looking for work, nightclub owners promoting their events, local restaurants offering specials if the user brings in a special code given through a pinned post in the page. These are small ideas I have and I am always open to more suggestions.
What do you guys think? Is this something worth pursuing as an initial project? I'm currently working as a waiter making 15k a year so any extra source of income could aid my fastlane journey. I have a vision in which I could promote so much through this group as college lifestyle in this city is lacking so much. I've watched it grow from the initial 200 members to now and although it took so little work to get it here, it's an opportunity that many don't really have.
