This post isn't aimed at mindset for me but for my son. I figured it's best to start his education while he's young, though I may be a few years too early at this point but we'll see. I used to watch Jim Cramer when I was first learning about stocks. I remember he said his daughter liked some toy and whenever the toy came out she wanted it. After a while, Cramer decided to check out the stock that produces the toy. Kids of today seem to know what the hot items are. My three year old son loves Sponge Bob. I never really cared for the yellow sponge like character. But I was curious to who made Sponge Bob since it has been on the air on Nikelodeon, has DVDs for sale, and has various toys in the market. Well, it's made by Viacom (VIA-B). The stock was in the mid $40s before the recent crash. The stock also is involved in movies such as Avatar, MTV, Nikelodeon, Comedy Central, and others. After some more research I figured this could be an interesting stock to buy for my son. I set up the purchase price for $29 since it was hovering at that price and I figured it would dip back down eventually. Well on Jan 28, the stock was purchased at $29.00. Since my son has no idea what a stock is, I wanted to make it something he could visualize. When he gets older I can explain stocks to him in more detail.
Edit: After I showed the slide to my wife she said to add other stocks on the page that may interest him. Some examples are disney characters for Disney (DIS), Gymboree (GYMB) for clothes he wears, and so on. I'm sure I'll make changes to the page in the future.
