The technology sphere changes so frequently, it can be a task and a half seeing WHERE things are headed, and how to spot gaps in the market when a need opens up, and how to address them. This is something I've been struggling with over the last few weeks, and I've been really thankful that I came across a few things today that help alleviate these issues. Hopefully this will be helpful to some of you guys/gals as well.
Firstly, Bond posted a great article written by the guy from YCombinator (direct link to the article here). In it he explains how to identify the actual needs rather than the "made up" needs. I believe this is a crucial aspect to being a successful entrepreneur.
The next step is to actually see what the people who matter are doing in the space - the investors. Robert Scoble created a Facebook list of investors here, where you can follow in real-time and see where they are putting their money. "Follow the money" and all of that....
Robert also created a list of startups you can follow as well - now you can see what trends are appearing in the SaaS/PaaS/App/Software markets as they happen. Not so you can copy them (unless you think you can create a better product), but to give you ideas and identify needs that are still not being met.
(disclaimer, I got both links from the question he answered on Quora, which is a great read as well).
If that's still not enough for you, then I'd suggest cracking out your RSS reader, and subscribe to:

Hope that can help some of you.
