Hey everyone! It's been a while since I posted. Just wanted to share something that was exciting for me and have something written down to force me to be accountable for my actions in the future.
I am a chemist working in a flavor/fragrance company, and I deal with a LOT of documentation (flavors/fragrances need to be highly regulated, who knew?).
I've been teaching myself programming with online resources for a number of months now, alongside playing with automation and writing scripts/programs. These were written to take care of the repetitive tasks that come with documents, and I found that my most VALUABLE asset, TIME, was finally being refunded to me during my day job, allowing me to focus on more interesting problems.
Well, I had an epiphany of sorts: I am sure there are others in the flavor/fragrance industry who deal with the mind-numbing repetitive tasks of regulatory compliance, so what if I could write a computer program tailored to the F&F industry to help streamline a lot of the document bullshit?
WELL (X2), I also remembered everything people have been saying here about listening to the market first to determine what problem to solve.
So, I happened upon IceCreamKid's gold thread about his idea to interview 100 movers/shakers in whatever niche you're dealing with. That was EYE-OPENING (Thank you @IceCreamKid !!!). I realized I have already been dealing with regulatory agencies for document requests, who could potentially be future clients/customers!
Next thing was creating a list of all the contacts I had, and I sent out an email to ask for an "interview" where I would ask them what tip/strategies they learned doing regulatory compliance that they believe help streamline their workflow, improve efficiency, etc.
As expected, out of about 60+ contacts emailed, only 2 people responded asking what the interview was about in detail. Luckily, ONE of the 2 people agreed to the interview! I had a Zoom call with them yesterday and, I have to say, it looks like I may be on to something with the programming stuff! Along with some tips/tricks, they mentioned a number of problems I was already dealing with in my own job, along with some others I didn't.
All in all, I'm happy it happened, and although they were not comfortable with me sharing the interview on a website I would create for other potential leads (again, credit to this goes to @IceCreamKid), I still offered to share with them any insights I may gain from interviewing other regulatory professionals. And they seemed quite appreciative of that.
Sorry to be long-winded, but I wanted to share this cause this was the first time I felt like I was an "action-taker". May more actions be taken
