hello TFLF,
Late thirties slowlaner and I was working till January of this year when things came to a sudden halt.
I was working in pharmaceutical distribution, slaving 10 hours / day. In January my company released its performance - increasing revenues and profits! Great! I thought, and glad to be a part of the organisation. But then came a bombshell: to "streamline and optimise" the business for effective performance (whatever that means), the management decided to do a restructuring.
As you might have guessed, within a few weeks, I was made redundant (laid-off in UK parlance) - what a start to 2017! As any slowlaner would do, I started flexing my network and sending out resumes to new jobs
One day after the resume-sending campaign, I thought to myself, is this what it has come to? I'm moving into the 40s soon, with a wife, haven't settled, but I'm hoping someone to hand me a career, a future, a job! Even if I find land another position, I'm still at the mercy of a (new) company?
Isn't there a way out? That I could have a freedom to do whatever the heck I want.
Out of frustration, I searched and searched...and eventually found the TMF . It resonated with me and then it lead to the forum.
I read the GOLD threads and was overwhelmed with the contents! Lots of wisdom and like all newbies in the forum, I struggled with the "starting out".......
..........looking for that elusive blueprint, that step-by-step process, that hand out, that short cut..........resulting in action-faking for a month.
Until I read @Andy Black, @SinisterLex & @MustImprove posts - a combination of helping mindset + problem solving + generating value. So I jumped to Upwork and decided to "help"; except that I haven't a clue with what or how to help.
But then, I realised over the course of my career, I've had many senior managers at different organisations commenting that I'm kind of good at a particular skill. I somehow believed it and submitted my very first "you-focussed" proposal for $100 for that skill.
Voila! The client was impressed!
Shit this works!
I went above and beyond to deliver the result he wanted. The result: 5-star recommendation and feedback.
For the first time in my life, I've helped and provided value to a stranger and got paid for it!
I know $100 isn't much at all and Upwork has its own issues; clearly I don't see it as a means to an end, as Lex pointed out in his post.
But....for someone that's unemployed and questioning his own credibility, this was addictive!
The feeling was soooo great (which I'd never gotten in the corporate world.)
I guess this is what successful fastlaners mean when they say "fastlane mindset".
Now I'm not there yet at all, but I'm starting to see the change.
I'm signing up for more proposals at Upwork to build enough cashflow.
Thank you Andy, Lex, MustImprove and the main man, MJ!
For anyone that's still researching, planning, reading, debating - aka action faking, just f*king start to help someone - anyone - it can be at Upwork, Fiverr, your colleague, friend, neighbour......
Just start!
