A quick word on leeches :
We received 2 separate calls today from 2 (probably related) media organizations.
The first was called Home Shopping Group out of Boca Raton, Florida. They're a shop at home television marketing group, disguised as the Home Shopping Network (HSN) but with no affiliation to them.
They call, flatter your business, ask questions about doing a story on your company for television, interest in your products, etc... basically get young entrepreneurs excited. I got noticed by a national home shopping store!
Fortunately for me, I have been through this exercise in a past life. I knew exactly who they were, and saved myself a lot of time and hassle.
They will send you scheduling information, and a follow up scheduling call. It is then that you learn this will cost you about $6k. By then, a lot of people are "hooked." Supposedly, you are going to pay $6k just to cover their production expenses...
Look deeply into who these companies are. ShopNBC, HSN, QVC... they don't CHARGE YOU to go on the air with them. They make their money off of product margin like any other retailer does.
Unfortunately, companies like this wanna be Home Shopping Group prey on false name recognition, the honor of being "discovered," and then charge you essentially for producing a few minute long infomercial that they then will air during what the industry considers "garbage time" - which is the dead air time on obscure cable channels that they can't sell to anyone for real commercials (such as 3AM on some loser channel).
BUYER beware. I got 2 of these calls just today! Because this isn't my first rodeo, each call took about 45 seconds.
