I feel like my relationship and life have come to a fork in the road. I love my GF, and we have known each other for almost a decade, but I feel like I'm being forced between taking a slowlane job I could have had in high school or ending our relationship.
Long story short, I have been freelancing for over a decade, there were ups and downs over the years, and I've currently bottomed out. The industry I'm in is in a steep decline but I also own responsibility for not being proactive enough or pivoting into something else.
The older I get, the harder it feels to just completely shift into something else. I am at the point where I can cover my bills, but not much else with my freelance work. We own a house in cash.
The problem is, she is blinded by how much money I'm making right now, not my future potential (or the fact that I've made almost 10x as much in the past). In her mind, it would be worth taking a crappy job that could net us $200 more a month. To me, my mental health is worth more than that. On the other hand, how long should she be expected to deal with me 'just scraping by'' until I figure out some other income sources?
Her suggestions of going back to school just don't realistic. Taking on student loan debt will just enslave me in the future.
It's a tough situation to be in, but ultimately I only have one life to live, and have to believe in myself even if no else does. I'm pretty sure this will be the end of our relationship, which hurts, but this is what happens when two people can't be supportive and believe in each other.
